Our fireplace is currently set up for gas but it was originally a wood fireplace. the previous owners converted to gas but I'd like to convert back.

would it be dangerous for me to convert back to wood? and if you have any knowledge of this, what would I need to do in order to convert back to wood, safely. Any tips. Thanks. :D

It would be extermely dangerous to attempt to work with a gas line if you don't know what you are doing. I'd suggest having a registered professional do the work. An explosion resulting from a gas leak can cause serious injury, death, or property damage.

The dangerous part of converting the fireplace would be the actual conversion. Once converted, it would be safe to use.

Shut off the main gas valve.
Disconnect the gas logs, and remove them from the fireplace.
Some folks will tell you to just cap off the existing gas pipe, at this point, But I would recommend that you follow the line back to where it joins another gas line, and cap it off at that point instead. There is no way you could have a gas leak inside the fireplace this way.
Install a grate for woodburning, and turn your main gas valve back on.... thats all there is to it.

Have Fun!

I just installed a vent-less gas log at the beginning of the last heating season. Works great. You can simply do it yourself. Every thing you need is in the box. I purchased the unit from Home Depot. If a vent-less unit is installed your not going to use the flue.

Use a cap to plug off the gas stub. Remove the gas logs and be certain the the chimney flue is operable.and your in business.
