I have gangs of people hanging out on my doorstep and nearby, smoking dope and drinking beer.. any suggestions for getting rid of them that don't include violence as I'm not fond of being arrested!!

spead dog poop and used cat litter around when they are not there. or use your own poopage, from the toilet.
After a few days they will get the idea that they are not welcome anymore - not that they ever were in the first place.
Either wait a couple weeks to see if they are gone for good, or wait till someone else complains about the stench to clean it up.
Otherwise, I'd complain to the police, but if they won't do anything, I guess its up to you to take action.

Play some country music or something. Just loud enough to bother them. Or heavy metal. Hope this works...it's worth a try!

Put speakers in your window & play Classical music very loudly!
