It usually only asks for that input when you send large attachments or you send multiple emails during a short period.

It is to prevent spamming.

Not sure what string of characters you are having to type but if you click on the To: just to the left of the address field it will bring up all your address and all you have to do is click the ones you want and than insert checked contacts...
