My favorite author is Orson Scott Card, although Douglas Adams runs a close second. I like more accessible sci-fi, rather than the more technical stuff.
My favorite villain - well, I'd really have to go along with most everyone else on the Baron Harkonen thing. He gave me the willies.

My two fav authors are Orson Scott Card & Sara Douglass.

As for a villain, I think StarDrifter (of the Wayfarer Redemption books) takes the cake . . . although technically not a "bad guy" all the bad stuff starts from something that he did, knowing that he shouldn't have . . . and yet, he keeps on doing stupid crap well into the second trilogy!

The book begins with:"170 days dying and not dead yet."

Its hard to pick my absolute favorite, but Joe Haldeman probably squeaks a little ahead of my other favorites.

As for a villain, I was intriqued by the Bereserkers in Fred Saberhagen's books. He did so much with them.

There are a lot of scifi writers that I like: Isaac Asimov, Robert A. Heinlein, Arthur C. Clarke, C.J. Cherryh, Phillip K. Dick, etc. My favorite villan is probably the White Witch, from "The Chronicles of Narnia." (I think the "Chronicles of Narnia" is still scifi, since it takes place on another dimension.)
