I think that it is a hauntingly beautiful song but i want to know if she is singing about someone or am i way off base with the message?

I love this song too and though I have often wondered the same thing myself (trying to find it so I can listen again) I cry through it. It was part of the City of Angels (movie) which was about an Angel (Nicholas Cage) that fell in love with a doctor (Meg Ryan) and decided to become human to be with her. It is a beautiful movie too.
When I find the song and re-listen, I'll come back and post a REAL answer.

Someone dying and going to heaven,it is a wonderfull song,my friend played it at someone's funeral because of the song's meaning of going to heaven and being "in the arms of the angles".

Getting to Heaven , Being in heaven.. it is a beautiful meaningful song and she has a beautiful angel voice.

In my opinion, the song is about finding solace and inner peace from the pain and suffering experienced in life.

She introduced it at the first Lilith Fair saying that it was inspired by the overdose death of a drummer(?). Sorry, but I don't remember who or the name of the band, but it was a real event.

i once saw an interview were she said she wrote the song after hearing about the smashing pumpkins keyboardist who died of an heroin overdose. i think she knew him.
