The colonists were angry about being taxed by England without having anyone represent them in England. "Taxation without representation". The king of England was having finacial troubles and placed taxes on goods going into America. The reason England's finances were low was because they spent so much sending military aide to America when the French attacked. The king felt it only right that the money he spent defending America from France needed to be partly re-embersed by American colonies in the form of taxes. While I am an American I really can't blame him for wanting to tax us to get back some of the money he spent defending us.

For the same reason Mexican Nationals want to separate from the Mexican government. Problem is, we are under invasion from the indigenous people - about 15 - 20 million so far - who are the poorest of the poor, uneducated and often illiterate. American citizens are being done in by the assault in both the dissolution of our American culture and in the billions of dollars our taxes pay to support the great majority of them. Yes, they work and work hard but most of their income is under the table and not taxed. And half of it goes back to Mexico to keep that corrupt country going. It's a deadly scenario for American citizens. In placed in this country the cities and towns are dead. It is a plague foisted upon us by the Activists who do not care about the millions they have told to invade and get the riches of taking back the country. Apparently the fifteen million we paid the Mexican government a couple of hundred years ago is a deal they wish to recall. Sorry but we aren't going to renegotiate.
In the late 1700's the colonists, led by the likes of George Washington had a dream of constitutional freedom and with genius to spare, they drew up the Constitution and Bill of Rights and created a government, the likes of which had never been seen or will be seen again. Every country is jealous of the U.S. and that is why we get such low marks amongst the world's people. We hit the jackpot and they want to break the bank. Pathetic.

Discussions broke down between the colonies and England with regard to the rights to plunder the new world. Colonists wanted exclusive rights and England wanted a 10% royalty. When the colonists refused England increased taxes on tea shipped to the new world in an effort to back channel the royalty. The colonists revolted in order to retain the exclusive right to manipulate the natives and plunder the resources. My neighbor's grandfather was an arbitrator with the colonists at that time and he told me what transpired.

1. Money
2. Control of their future.
3. A quirk of human nature - the desire to do something correctly, to start something from first principles. If you read the writings or people like Jefferson, they were actually interested in setting up a different kind of government.

Of course, the British were not interested in surrendering the first two, and did not understand the strength of the third.

Paying taxes to a non-resident king without any representation.

The colonies were being sucked dry for the benefit of the British Empire - enough was enough.
