Most of the pre-World War Two pitching records will never be broken because of the different standards in practice today. In the 1920s-60s, there were no "pitch counts" or long-short relief strategies. Why, even into the 70s, it was very common for some star pitchers to rack up 20 or more complete games.
Certainly records like Johnson's 112 career shutouts or Cy Young's 511 wins will never ever be even approached. I even think that after the retirements of Clemens, Maddux and Glavine, we might never see a pitcher reach 300 wins.
I am sure a lot of those early pitchers pitched games on one or no days rest. In the 1905 World Series, Christy Mathewson pitched 3 shutouts in five days.

Sandy Koufax pitched shutouts in games 5 and 7 of the 1965 World Series against the Twins..He threw a 4 hitter in game 5 and a 3 hitter in game 7..I thought it was a pretty amazing feat to come back on two days rest, and pitch that well in the 7th game of the WS...
I would say the chances of any pitcher ever throwing 4 shutouts in 4 days is pretty slim, so that record is safe...

"Ruth hit his HRs with a dead ball"
Actually the ball was changed in 1920 BEFORE he hit most of his homeruns. And no, that record will never be broken. Its mostly because back then an awesome pitcher didn't have to be at 100% to dominate. Now that the talent gap has diminished, a pitcher must be at his best in order to do very well, hence the 5 man rotation. Also, the decreased mound height increases the risk of injury so managers must be careful. But how that guy could pitch that often and consistantly throw 91 (baseball-almanac.com) is beyond me.

That will never be broken. That record was made back when teams had a three man rotation and it was fairly common to see a pitcher pitch every other, or in his case every day. Now with the five man pitching rotation pitchers go once in every four or so games.

You already responded you very own question; many knuckleballers have pitched properly into their previous due 40s. the nice and cozy button is how long can he be useful? Phil Niekro set the all time checklist for wins after age 40 with 121... Wakefield has won purely 174 in his total profession. Niekro additionally pitched a no-hitter contained in the vast leagues, as did Hoyt Wilhelm. Niekro is likewise the oldest guy to pitch a shutout contained in the main leagues, throwing one at age 40 six. With the salaries pitchers earn on the instant, I doubt that Wakefield will carry it up until the pink Sox stress him too by liberating him. At $4 million in step with twelve months, why supply it up until they haul you out on a gurney?

It will never happen again. During Walter Johnsons time pitchers had to work much harder abd Johnson was more durable than most. He also holds the major league record with 110 shutouts in his amazing career.

I don't think that record will ever be broken, especially not nowadays where pitchers are babied. 105 pitches thrown and they take the starter out. Then he doesn't pitch again for another 5-6 days. Pitchers are definitely not as tough nowadays as they used to be!

You will never ever see that happen again. Wilbur Wood was the last pitcher that would pitch on just 2 days rest. That;s a tough feat to duplicate. "By the way Lou Gehrig average was .340
