I have never understood why the Mafia exhists in this country, I became curious about it and so I researched it and apparently it had to do with prohibition. The point is I was wondering if people in the mafia harm innocent people or just harm other mafia people? does anyone know?

I think Benny Siegel said it best when he said "we only kill each other". Thats the standard rule for the mob. No one outside the mob is suppose to be hurt. Dutch Shultz got whacked because he went against the Commission and tried to have Thomas E. Dewey killed. Dewey was with the D.A. and considered a civillian, so The Dutchman had to go. There are some instances where innocents have gotten hurt and killed. Most of the time it is just a case of mistaken identity. Honestly, who cares if a couple of gangsters whack other gangsters? Its when innocent people get hurt that the public demands that something be done. Therefore the heat factor is less if less innocents are hurt.

It is my understanding they will sometimes kill innocent members of a family to put the pressure on a mafia screw up

No they just take care of business.
If you do business with the mafia you know what the deal is and what is expected.
If you deal with the government you have no idea what the hell is going on and you got to watch your back every second.

It's a good business. many drugs are ilegal in this country.
