What is the proper term for this sort of individual?

I know two male friends, who seem to have some habits and routines that seem really gay, yet they are completely hetero. My gay friends often whisper to inquire if they are gay, and I tell them they aren't.

Abosolutey a person can be gay without the appearance of being gay.

Not everyone is so forthright in the appearance.

I do not feel the need to advertise. Some gays want everyone to know that they are gay. Good for them.

I do not feel the need nor the desire to publicly advertise my sexual preferences.

Your friends are not "acting gay". They may behave in way that is similar to the way that a heterosexually gay person (queen) might act, but they do not have the appearance of being gay. How can you show the appearance of being gay? Your friends display effeminate gestures, habits, and routines, not "gay" ones. Your friends are simply effeminate heterosexuals. I don't think that your friends are metrosexual. Metrosexuality has to do with designer clothes and well-maintained grooming habits. Are your freinds usually dressed nicely and well-groomed? If so, then your friends are metrosexual.

Gender nonconformity. They say this may be caused by hormones, but it can be learned as well. Not everyone with a gender nonconformity becomes gay. It is a separate issue, though often confused with the same. Many children go undiagnosed with this and many will think they are gay, and that alone can influence a child to consider to choose to be gay. Of course the child thinks he may be born gay because the way he acts, and often other people do as well. This is why gender nonconformity should be better known. Not all children with a gender nonconformity will be gay, and not all children who become gay will have a gender nonconformity, it is separate issues.

Of course. Don't judge a book by it's cover! Neither a person by their looks or even their demeanor. I have been led to the same assumptions and been misled. It can be very embarrassing. But if the habits and routines seem that way, I think I might think of changing some of them so that people wouldn't be misled. Oh well, everyone is gonna think something wrong about someone sometime, I suppose, so just be yourself and let them think whatever, I guess.

Ya know, it is really very tired to see this kind of stuff...If a guy is not a slob, does not have his pants hanging down to his crack, does care about himself enough to be well groomed, he is suddenly considered GAY...I can only say that, if this is the criterion of being Gay, I would be complemiented to be called Gay. I am sick and tired of guys looking like slobs, thinkng they are sooooo cool when they just look like jerks. Gay or not, I have no problem with good grooming. You can have the dirty haired, nasty looking straights all you want.

Metrosexual - a hetero guy that acts like the *stereotypical* gay guy

And I'll agree. Never judge a book by its cover.

It is called being metro, the ppl above are correct. There are some women too, that are the same. They are very manly in presentation and appearance, however completely straight. It simply boils down to hormones and balance regarding hormone levels.

What is the appearance of being gay??? Do you mean that the guy is slightly effiminate? Sure he can be straight, although people will probably question it. That's how people are.
