I went to high school the captain and 1/3 owner of the F/V Northwestern (probably the most popular boat on the Discovery Channel crab fishing show). He graduated at the bottom of our class. His first year as a full-time commercial fisherman he grossed over $60k... that was over 20 years ago.
A greenhorn (first year fisherman) makes a flat fee their first trip. If they proved themselves as a greenhorn, the second trip they'll get a percentage of what the boat makes.
I now live on the opposite coast and am no longer "in touch" with the commercial fishing industry. The gov't. has done away with the derby season for crab fishing (in the name of safety). Boats are now alllocated how many pounds of crab they can catch before the, now, expanded season opens. In the future there will be fewer crab boats fishing the Bering Strait. This will mean fewer jobs.

~~~have you ever watched on Discoverys "most Dangerous Jobs" ? I think they get about $5.00 a pound,,,,,its sooooo very dangerous,,,the crew can make any where from $5,000.00 and up for a 6 week out to sea,,,I saw on that show that some of then made $25,000 for the 6 week catch,,,,I think they should get paid more for such a dangerous jog,,,,,and after watching that show,,,,I dont mind paying $15.00 a pound for Crab legs,,,,,yummy,,,,Thank you to alll the Crab fishermen,,,,,,!!!!~~~
Alot dude. This is because you have to be mental in order to do it. It is literally one of the deadliest jobs in the world. But again, you do make bank. I'm pretty sure a deck hand could roll in at least $100,000 for a season. Most of the captains are multi-millionares.
