While in Gulf Shores this past weekend, I saw and stepped on dozens of stingrays very close to shore. They were buried out of sight just under the sand in water that was about 1 1/2 feet deep to 4 feet deep. I have never seen these here before. They were sandy brown, some with light colored spots on their backs. They ranged anywhere from 6 inches across to 12 inches across. I wanted to know what type of rays these were and why so many were gathered here.

I am pretty sure from your description that the rays that you saw were yellow stingrays. But other species found in the gulf includem southern, atlantic, and bluntnose. Many stingrays congregate in large groups especially close to shore.
