Everybody Loves Raymond - In the beginning of the episode "Crazy Chin", Robert has dinner with his wife Amy, his mother-in-law Pat, his father-in-law Hank, and his brother-in-law Peter. He is seen touching food to his chin before he eats it. Hank and Pat are wondering why does he do it.

something about being neglected after ray was born. his mother did it to clean up spills on his chin but stopped after ray was born. he began feeding himself and now does it subconsciously when upset.(kinda Freudian)

Marie always used to touch Raymond's food to his Chin when he was a baby scooping off what he spit out, and Robert felt left out, so he started doing it to compensate.

The reason was explained in the final season, but I want to know WHEN the reason was created by the writers. Was this something they had in mind all along, or did they come up with it at the show s ending?
