i have a fish tank and i've noticed all the neons swim together, the plecs do, the clown fish do. How do they know that they look the same and are the same species? Do they realise their reflections? or give off some chemical to their own kind? they must be more clever than people think!

Instinctive programming. Most social animals recognize by instinct their own kind.

Becareful, they are plotting against you and soon the armies of fish will rise up to defeat you and win their freedom.

FIsh are smarter than we give them credit for, maybe one of the other fish told them what they look like, if you've got enough for them to be in a group they'll work it out.

When i used to keep fish, one of them banged on the side of the tank to get my attention when the other one wasn't feeling well and lying at the bottom of the tank.
