I think for his first feeding of cereal you should put 1 spoonful of cereal with about 2 ozs of formula or breastmilk. Then gradually increase the consistancy of it. You dont want it to be too think at first.
As he gets older you can even mix some fruit with the cereal.

Are you talking about putting cereal in a bottle? Because you should never do that unless specifically instructed to do so by your Dr to treat reflux.
Babies under 6 mo generally should not be recieving anything besides breastmilk or formula. No juice, no cereal or other solids.
Don't expect solids to make a baby sleep well. My 16 month old eats tonnes of solids all day and still doesn't "sleep well".

I always just poured as much as I thought my son could eat, which was about a tablespoon of rice ceral, then I mixed it with just one scoop out of the formula. A trick that I was shown, to make the rice cereal more appetizing (if you havent tasted yet, its pretty gross) was to mix a little bit of baby fruit in it also. But the water part is your choice. Make it pretty runny because that stuff can get pretty thick. On the box it tells you to go by how thick or runny you want to make it, but if your son's belly gets full he'll sleep better. You might also want to check if he has colic, if he's crying alot and inconsolable, it could possibly be the dreaded colic. My son got it, and I started him on the Enfamil Gentlease, for colicy babies and used it even after he was over it and it worked GREAT! I never had any problems with a fussy baby after I started that formula.

I started with 1 teaspoon of rice cereal and added enough milk to make it smooth. I noticed that rice made baby constipated, so I used oatmeal more.

I am sure I will get a lot of flack for this but this is what we did w/ our son who was NOT a good sleeper seemed endlessly hungry.
We put in 1 teaspoon of rice cereal per 2 oz of breastmilk/formula. shake it well and you may need to make the nipple hole bigger.
The density of it helped hold it down in his tummy better and made him feel fuller, thereby sleeping longer.
When he got spoon age.. we made it as a thicker gruel type food.. he loved it... then we got adventurous and added 3 minute egg yolk to it ... (we called it grandma egg suprise)..bet he would eat it now if he could... lol.
