genetics may very well have an impact.. but certainly the upbrining of the pedophile as a child has a great deal as to thier behaviors as an adult

If you're wondering if there is a pedophile gene in the gene pool, I don't think so. In harmony with some of the other anwsers, prior abuse as a child is a contributing factor to memory suppression, that in turn becomes the mystification complex as to their conditioned mental association of sexuality and childhood. All other adult possibilities are focused out of consciousness as they represent emotional disturbance and social disorientation. Now you have a neurotic basis for pedophilia.

There are other pedophilic neuroses based on a hostile reaction and superstition that all human wrong acts, violence for example have their genisis in sexual suppression and the only way to save children from the same fate is to introduce them to sex as soon as possible. I think such people are identifying sex as love and that there is no other expression for affection other than physical contact of a sexual nature, i.e. the greater pleasure is the greater expression for affection. This crude thought is symptomatically suspect as a form of mental retardation as love is expressed in higher abstract reasoning in the normal mature adult. Self concept and personal action are mentally disassociated so that the concept for other is perceived as hostile to selfs freedom for expression, that freedom becoming nothing in self concept. This non-self-concept self concept is an avoidance of the hurt of personal failure but not a total negation for personal responsibility as the positive notion 'to do no harm' IS their concept for personal responsibility, but is limited to the immediate perceivable, the immediately sensable concrete definitions for 'harm'. Concrete thought process is child thought process. see following link for stages for intellectual development.

Many male pedophiles have professed to having similar treatment given to them as children by an adult. Because of that I would say that pedophilia stems from molestation as a child. A child's state of mind is significantly more fragile than an adult's so to suffer treatment like that (particularly by a trusted adult on a frequent occassion) would haunt them into adulthood and lead them down the path.

Females are less likely to go for particularly young children (as opposed to men), but boys who have entered or are nearing puberty. To feel that a young boy is "attracted" to an adult like herself makes her feel young and much more secure. So having no stable adult relationships is what can lead a woman to pedophilia. (And substitute boys with girls if she is a homosexual as opposed to heterosexual.)

For adult men it's a great way to show off "power" and "control" and for women it's a way to retain youth and security.

One reason why a lot of people suffer from weird sexual behavior, is because they experienced it when they were younger. People who are obessed with unusual sexual desires were probably sexually abused themself...I think.

They can only get enjoyment when they are in control. They are unable to relate to adults especially women on an equal level.

It seems to be hereditary. In cases where there is no family history, it's a new level of porn usage.

Same could be asked of all things. Somethings are learned, somethings are genetic....
I've heard the same question about: racism, homosexuality, addictive personalities...all sorts of things.
I guess the only real answer, is the...it's just another mystery of life...

I think it's the vampire disease. If you get bit by a vampire, you can't help becoming a vampire, and the only way to get rid of one is to kill it.

It is called a cycle of abuse. There is a 98 percent chance that they have been abused themselves. There is no cure for this sickness
