My girlfriend brought this up and she has a point that they are just breasts. Why are her breats obscene but mine aren't?

The answer is arguably arbitrary, but it's that in most Western countries, a woman's breasts are considered an erogenous zone whereas a man's are not. Why? Cultural construction, I suppose.
The issue isn't one of obscenity, but modesty, and there's a difference. The idea is that there are parts of one's body that should only be seen in an intimate context. What parts fall under those categories vary widely - from absolutely everything in Muslim cultures to almost nothing in America.

It's a culture thing. In the US culture, a woman baring her breasts can be arrested. In another cultures (some African ones) it is acceptable however, some males that drink the drug alcohol to excess for many years do develop breast like females. They are "obscene" and can be found exclusively in Alcoholics Anonymous. Just look for the fat drunk chanting AA slogans in the corner! Stay clear of that dangerous cult! Female breasts are secondary sexual characteristics that most males find attractive, even me. At any rate, your interest in breasts will wane after time and become a non-issue. Trust me.

But you can bet anytime a woman does go topless she will be arrested for indecent exposure and she will have to spend money defending herself.
It is just one of those things that people are willing to allow our law enforcers to continue doing even if it means our tax dollars will be spent to procecute a women even when the case is doomed to be lost.
A lot of men doen't even feel confortable showing their own nipples in public. Considering the appearence of the average person, I personally would rather not see either topless in most public places.

That is a verry good point, I don tknow the correct answer to but I am going to find out!!!! I think that it is because they are biger? and concidered a Sexual turn on. there two differnt strutures one are muscular and the other stcks out or sags in other cases! it is just a private part..
I am going to do some recearch and contact my local people and see what I can come up with. Thank you for asking this question!

STOP...! Have we all just gotten off the boat here...? Go to Africa and you both can be topless forever...! In our society and culture - here in America - yes! A woman's publicly-bared breasts are considered obscene... Don't mention nursing in public... We need not go there...

They practically do.
I think it's just what we have always accepted in our society. It seems to be being whittled away however, I mean watch the award shows the ladies there are pretty much topless.
Course us ladies don't have to go take a cold shower cause a guy has his shirt off either.

Female breasts are a private part. However, they should make men with man boobs and really big pecs wear a shirt in public.

I see your logic.
They are just breast. Why are a woman's considered osbcene in public.. that makes perfect sense.
I can't answer your question as to why though.. unfortunately. I guess there is a double standard.

It depends on where you live. In NY, its legal for a woman to be topless in public. All the police can do is ask a woman to cover up. If she refuses, then the cop has to leave her alone.

Actually, your breasts are obscene, too, but we've pretty much resigned ourselves to the fact that we just can't keep a shirt on you.
