It would have to be Geddy Lee, I have yet to see any rock bassist that ever came close to him. John Entwistle is a great bassist as well, but you said who is the best in metal as well as Rock N' Roll. Geddy has influenced players like Steve Harris and Cliff Burton.

Tough question...there are so many. A very UNDER-RATED bassist that is incredible, would be Billy Sheehan, who plays with Steve Vai. Other wise, I'd agree Robby Merrill of Godsmack is awesome, Cliff Burton, Gene Simmons.....there's a lot...all the names I've seen for this question (that I knew) are good choices!
