They started out as an expensive and macho-looking item that men wanted to throw money at. Now that women discovered SUVs can hold a lot of kids and related stuff and prices have come down due to competition and bad mileage those gender and class factors are both out.

Yeah, SUV's were big and bulky, mainly the hardcore outdoorsmen vehicle, but since they are so big, groceries, kids, etc, can all do the same for women.
Generally, i'd say depending on the model of the suv to class the person inside, for example, say someone is driving around in a brand new escalade, they probably wouldn't be poor, they are most likely wealthy..But none of this should matter :p

well moms seem to be the ones,.carpooling kids to the soccer..and other ball games.. and dance lessons.. so that is why a lot of female have the suv. and most of this carpooling is done in the suburbs.. so that has to do with class. the price tag... has a lot to do with class as well.. unfortunately men still want that sports car look. you know look at me.. i am young. i may have a wife and ten kids.. and i am balding.. and i can barely make it to the bathroom .. but hey i aint driving no suv

Class...umm..not everyone can afford those gallons of gas....so it definitely is relevant in regards to class...now in regards to gender...I'd say it's a social thing...like...SUVs are kinda considered rough 'n tumble....but since they have more features and space for kids...like the dude before me said...then the gender demand has changed.

they are more expensive, so class is usually higher. girls sometimes like them, but guys like them to haul all the sports equipment, fit more people, tailgating...
