First, make sure not to have too many fish. The general rule is 1 inch of fish per gallon. Tetras are generally very resillient, so you should get some for your firts batch. Try to get community (non-agressive) fish if possible. Ensure you get a mix if fish that are 1-bottom feeders, 2-mid tank, and 3-top of the tank fish.
buy ick medicine, as this is the most common type of disease they will get. Also, do not over feed them as the food will rot and make the tank dirty. Whatever you do, do not put in a Male Beta (fighting fish). They are very agressive with other male fish.

I had a ten gallon when I started being a hobbyist, and I started off with my favorite: gold dust mollies. They are so cute, have great temperament, and you can get a male and female. They'll have a great time together. They might even have babies!!! One of mine did. Also, another great fish is the neon tetra or rasbora hets. Both of these are schooling fish, and need a few others of their kind to run around with and feel secure. Try the gold dust mollies and rasbora hets. That's a really good combination. Neither one of them is too aggressive, and they should mix well. Good luck.

FEMALE bettas.. some people may think they are ugly, but if you choose the right ones, they are VERY colorful. They live together quite nice. Plus they are only about $2.00 each.
p.s make sure you DONT get males. they arent community fish at all (with their own species/males!!

well then you would want a saltwater tank because the saltwater have prettier fish, but they are more difficult to maintain.
