My 1997 Sunfire is makeing alot of tappet noise. I am sure I have to adjust them. My question is, is this something I can do myself and how do I do it?

You more than likely have a hydraulic lifter bad or going bad. There is usually no adjustment for hydraulic lifters. Do not burn a higher octane gas , that engine's ignition is not hot enough to burn high octane gas, it will only cause more carbon buildup.

Make sure its not a collapsed lifter making the noise that is hydraulic lifter and they usually go bad and start tapping
