I've heard to go south and not the border. I'd like to experience the real mexico.

Guadalajara is good, but so is the country. I would talk to a travel agent. It would be best if you could see how the culture really works and how some people still live. If possible try to see the villages. This should show you the real Mexico. Also try to do it in a group. Many people have been kidnapped by going alone. Good luck!

Cancun is for THE TOURIST that is the one with three cameras and a tripod colorful silk shirt pointing and waving at everything asking the locals where is this whats that. Oh many times the hat is cotton with brim turned down shorts and skinny legs. Yes that was me the first trip. Go to the interior from the border or a good costal town to see and mingle with the locals. Not tourist areas.

well cancun is the best but go across the border to nearest town, theres always one at the most 30 min away

You can go to Santa Ana, Califonia. It's just like Mexico.
