Read the instructions that come with your kit. You can't put it on the wrong side, the fittings are different for the high and low side.

Always recharge an ac system through the low side, never on the high side. There are two fittings, one on the suction side of the compressor, the low side, and the other on the discharge side, the high side. The low side usually has a blue cap and the high side a red cap. The high side is always larger than the low side. An auto parts store can sell you a can of freon with a gauge attatched to it, and you can recharge it yourself. The fitting supplied with it will only fit on the low side, so you can't accidentally put it on the wrong side. Just remember, freon does not evaporate from the system, it leaks. Find the leak and fix it or permanent damage can be done to your system.
