Oh it is one of these old rules that they used to have in the days of the dinosaurs. It was so people would have to spend more money on clothes. They also changed skirt lenghts so people would have to get new skirts all the time. If mini skirts were in style people had to wear them even if they were pregnant. Then people went crazy in the 60s because everything was so repressive. Now we are more free to wear what we want to with fashion. It was so strict back then. Now we have more versitle fashion instead of the old dorky fashion of that day. People used to wear mostly the same hair styles back then too and wash their hair once a week and get it set in these strange hard styles that is why women were ironing it straight in the 60s. I was not born then, but I heard about it from my mother. It was very rigid before then and people were so similar it was so hard. Now we have ballanced out more we are not 60s and we are not in that repressive time. You can do what you want. It is more of a dress shoe thing anyway. It is more for shoes. White shoes will not look as good after labor day. As a little girl I would wear navy or black dress shoes and not my white ones any longer. It does not apply to athletic shoes. It might go for your purse too. Now people wear black year roung with sandals and sundresses so it is not so much a thing.

It used to be that white was considered a color that was worn in spring and summer and Labor Day frequently is the unofficial end to summer, a time when kids go back to school and such. Now that fashion rules are so varied there is no rule any longer about wearing white after Labor Day. There are even whites known as "winter whites" that look great no matter what temperature it is outside. You can wear anything as long as you feel good in it and it makes you look good.

The item in question was white shoes. They were regarded as strictly for summer wear and it was simply not the done thing to wear white (shoes) after Labor Day.

That rule is for YOUR GRANDMA!!!! What kind of sense would it make for any fashionable person to only wear dark colors at a time of year that you are more likely to be pale. It makes people look harsh to have dark colors against pale skin. Furthermore winter white was the thing starting winter of 2004 or 2005 and we may see it again this year.

Generally the no white after labor day rule applies to shoes and handbags. Few people follow it anymore, and it's okay to wear white whenever you want.

I have heard that it is because white reflects heat and that would keep you cooler in the winter which is not very desirable in most places. I understand that this rule was only to apply to shoes but somehow got crossed over into all clothing, tennis shoes exempt.

It's antiquated. You can wear white after Labor Day, if you do so fashionably.
