Two reasons:
1) serves as a hint for when they forget their name
2) so that when they get changed in the dressing room, they know which are their clothes!

Everyone in the squad has a squad number, so it identifies their clothes when the kit man does the washing.
Plus it keeps the players in check, and lets them know whos boss!
Plus, you would want to be Joey Barton if you rubbed deep heat into Stuart Pearce's shorts!
