check connections in the back of the tower, sometimes the cable from the mouse tugs on and can disconnect other cables which can make it pretty randon.

There could be an installation error. Sometimes you will have to install the sound card (drivers) after installing the modems.
Also there could be malfunctioning hardware.

jacko, go here, and search for the sound card driver, and make sure you have the lastest driver for the sound card. Good Luck
