i will never forget the image of steve irwin talking to the camera while sharks were in a feeding frenzy all around him while he stood in the water...the guy was a crazy kook but he was fascinating, funny and very entertaining...i kind of felt one day his luck would run out the way he took risks dealing with wildlife but i would never have guessed it would take a stingray to be the culprit....my condolences to his friends and family....he was one of a kind and his legacy will continue as his shows run on animal planet

"Steve Irwin, the ebullient Australian TV personality and conservationist known as the Crocodile Hunter, was killed Monday by a stingray barb to the heart during a diving expedition, police and his wildlife park said.

Irwin, 44, was filming an underwater sequence for a television series on remote Batt Reef off the far northeast coast of Australia when he encountered the ray and was stung about 11 a.m. (0100 GMT), Australia Zoo, Irwin's park, said in a statement.

Crew members aboard Irwin's boat, Croc One, called emergency services in the nearest city, Cairns, and administered cardio pulmonary resuscitation techniques as they rushed the boat to nearby Low Isle to meet a rescue helicopter.

He was pronounced dead sometime later."

Steve May you rest in peace and may the hearts of everyone be with your family and friends. you will be greaty missed, not only as that guy on the tele poking animals with sticks but a a true aussie conservationist with a big heart and can always make you laugh. My thoughts go out to his daughter his son and his lovely wife. may you rest in peace steve and i hope you are in a better place. Brought a tear to my eye steve Will always love you.

Police have been examining footage of the incident which shows Irwin swimming above the stingray when it lashes out at him. He can then be seen pulling the serrated barb out of his chest before losing consciousness.

Irwin, 44, became famous around the world for his conservationist work and for death-defying close work with dangerous animals, notably crocodiles.

His family is considering releasing the footage of the fatal incident to the public.

Stingrays can deliver horrific, agonising injuries but deaths from the barbs are extremely rare. Irwin's death was only the third known death from the creatures in Australian history.

Police viewing the footage say there is no evidence Irwin had been intimidating the stingray before it struck. He was merely observing the creature.

It is so shocking that he would die. I mean i have never seen anyone die from a stingray. He is a professional with animals. Why didn't he have the right gear he needed on? At least he died doing what he loved! I guess god needed him up in heaven!

It shows how precious life is. In todays world it's become cool to take a bunch of risks in our lives like skydiving, mountain climbing, etc... but some of the greatest professionals in these sports and activities die.

Life is short.

You are not the only one. I find it difficult to accept. Watching him for years on discovery and Animal Planet, I may have wanted to believe that he was invincible....I keep asking God why? .....Why a good guy...I am also angry that Paris Hilton is still with us....Wish they could trade places........
