When u sample u take an element out of any creative media to form another form of creative media. Covering is just recreating the same song with minor changes.

I think sampling is when the tune is breifly used somewhere in the song or a lyric.
i,e Gary Numan: Are Friends Electric and then Sugababes SAMPLED it with Freak Like Me
Covering is just singing the song and playing the instruments the same way as the original was.
i.e Unchained melody is a highly COVERED song.

A sample is just taking the backround music, using it and having your own lyrics, plus some of your own music in the backround. Take Puff Daddy, or P.Diddy, or whatever the heck he likes to be called today. Most of his music has samples from other songs, that's why he sucks. Alot of rap music has samples from other songs in them too. Covering a song means that nothing is really changed about the song, except for the way that they sing it.

A sample is when you take just a part of a songs lyrics or music and add it too anther song. Covering a song just means playing the song lyric for lyric you can change musical styles but if you sing it word for word you are covering a song.

Covering a song is like Britney Spears singing 'My Prerogative', which was originally done by Bobby Brown.
Sampling A song is like when Rihanna used pieces of Tainted Love by Soft cell in her song S.O.S. -
So covering is basically doing a re-make.
And sampling is only using pieces of an original song.

Sampling means using a line, phrase or melody from the song in what is otherwise your own work. Covering is your version of somebody else's song.
