A little known "series" is by Stephen King about a cowboy in another world similair to our own. In these books The Stand, Heart In Atlantis, The Talisman and It all tie into these books in one way or another. If you are intersted in sci-fi / westerns this is it for you. The first book is called The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger, make sure to read them in order or you'll be totally lost.

J.K. Rowling has created some wonderful characters in the Harry Potter series (I enjoy her stories with as much enthusiasm as my 8 year old). I'd also recommend Steven King's work too; although I prefer his stories like Firestarter that deal with the good vs. evil people rather than actual monsters such as in It or Dreamcatcher.
