i simply will not listen to the words if the music is bad.
on the other hand there have been a number of songs
i refused to listen to even though the music was good
because the words were bad.
a song is the combination of words and music so if
one half the song is bad i do not bother with the other
half.

i would say lyrics 3/4 and 1/4 beat. I mean a song has to have good beat of course, but if it has something degrating towards a group of people, or promotes something i am against i won't like it. It's also got a little of the musicians personality mixed in, because i don't feel like listening to someone who i know is a bad person in real life, or doesn't even write their own lyrics. i think lyrics are more important, because they determine if you can or can't relate to a particular song, and if you fell the same emotion the writer did. Therefore, if the artist isn't also the lyricist i won't have much interest in their music, because they believe beat and appearance are more important.

I think the lyrics and the music determines my preference for genre. You can get the best of both worlds. I used to write songs.

For me -- if the tune is off, the beat is not fitting the sounds, then I won't even get to the lyrics. And yes, I try to listen very carefully to what my teenagers were listening to when they were in my home (they are now independent adults) -- to make sure that they were NOT listening to something violent, sexist, about predatory behaviors or just plain offensive or prejudiced. They may not have liked it that I banned offensive noise from the house -- but in reality -- I DO NOT support violence, prejudice, abuse of any human being or any explicit lyrics.

Definately the music. I seldom can understand the lyrics, and sometimes, especially with rap, that is a good thing!
Note: I agree with "wee you": it is the lead singer's voice that produces FAMOUS bands. Without a good voice, they would be just like any other good band. It is the VOICE that counts the most for becoming famous!
