Mainstream refers to what the general public seems to buy, want and read. As opposed to more obscure books, reference books, out of the ordinary stories (which can still become cult and underground favorites and thus make their way into the mainstream). But take a look at the NY Times Bestseller list or 'Bestsellers' on Amazon.com -- that is mainstream books. The ones that sell.

A mainstream book is one that you would find at Chapters. Or any popular bookstore. It is designed to appeal to a wide assortment of readers and doesn't require any specialized or esoteric knowledge. i think it is a book published by one of the large nationally known publishing houses rather one of the smaller lesser known publisher.
