Penicillin is one of the earliest discovered and widely used antibiotic agents, derived from the Penicillium mold. There are many contributors to its success for example: Ernest Duchesne he actually discovered it 32 years before Fleming...but his findings went unnoticed...Fleming was certainly not the first scientist to have noticed the antibacterial effects of molds. In 1871, Joseph Lister had found that a mold in a sample of urine seemed to be inhibiting bacterial growth. In 1875 John Tyndall reported to the Royal Society in London that a species of Penicillium had caused some of his bacteria to burst. In 1877, Louis Pasteur and Jules Joubert observed that airborne microorganisms could inhibit the growth of anthrax bacilli in urine that had been previously sterilized...then there were Alexander Fleming, Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin, Dr. Howard Florey, John Sheehan, and Andrew J Moyer.

Dr Alexander Flemming in the 1920's. Check an encyclopedia for the exact spelling. I have done several school reports on the man and his smarts.
