What social class was Niccolo Machiavelli in?

He grew up in an upper-middle class type family. He became a politician and diplomat--which would be upper-middle class as well--but lost everything when the Medici's came back into power. He lived the rest of his life in relative poverty and exile. This is when he wrote most of his works. I'm not sure if that answers your question, but that's what I've got.
