Seems people turn into idiots around blind people, acting as if they are soooo amazing or soooo fragile. I have lived with blind parents my entire life and have heard every insult and every rude comment out there. This is the 21 Century and people are acting like it is the dark ages. I thought it was getting better, but now my parents are both blind and OLD to boot, no respect in any direction these days! What gives with that?

Unfortunately the problem isn't just with blind people. It's with people of all disabilities. I use a wheelchair and I can talk just fine -- hear just fine -- but I can't tell you the number of times people have spoken LOUD to me or S L O W. I feel like saying "I'm cripple, not DEAF" Anyway, people don't know how to speak to people with disabilities. I don't know why, we've been around since the dawn of time. It's just for years we've been kept away in institutions and houses and now we're living our lives -- imagine that!

So, if you see a person with a disability and you want to offer help, please do. But please also understand that 'no, thank you' in no way diminishes from your offer to help. I happen to like to challenge myself each day by doing things for myself. Be good to all people -- including people with disabilities.

You can create laws that allow people with disabilities (including those who are blind) to get involved in their community (Braille, ramps) but you cannot legislate attitudes. People are going to think what they want to think. People with disabilities have to learn to develop 'thick skins' -- that's just life.

But just live.

I guess some people might be kind of scared of blind people, if they've never known any and they don't know how to act. Some people might overcompensate by being overly polite and accommodating, offering help all the time, while others treat them poorly because they believe that people who are disabled or just plain different are somehow inferior.

My best friend is blind, know where you come from. There not deaf either in most cases. I have a special child as well, hate those little yellow bus jokes to. People are people and have feeling no mater what their problems are. But what comes around goes around and one day they may have no choice but to understand so don't let it get you down. My friend has a good sense of humor she even tells blind jokes and religious jokes and she is both. but they are light hearted and funny of course. Have a really good one:-)

Many people treat other people regardless of their disability with disrespect. Their misbehavior is a function of ignorance, selfishness and fear, which they do not have the intelligence or foresight to work through. They were brought up in homes where they were not taught respect or respected themselves which, unfortunately, is too often the case. They are truly the most difficult people to accommodate.

People are not sure how to interact with blind people, they will even speak louder around them. I guess it is an unknown so they don't know what to do. The old part is easy, some folks are uneasy around older people because to deny older is not to become old! Treasure your parents, they have a special daughter. Good luck

Some folk are uncomfortable around anyone who doesn't fit their idea of normal, and they just react badly. There is no hope for this.
I once knew a real jerk of a kid who picked on a blind neighbor because he thought since she couldn't see who it was, she couldn't identify him. Let's just say he was very surprised and his mother gave him the whoppin' of his life.

Personally I do not know why. But I do know that no matter the handicap they will judge u. See I have Cerebral Palsy. People judge me way to much. To me peoples minds today are like this "If they r not like me they r no good"

Goodness knows where you live? - but wherever it is, I don't want to live there.

Here, in southern England, we respect blind people and help as much as we can.
