Pulleys: http://images.google.com/images?q=Pulleys&hl=en&btnG=Search+Images
Pulleys are used to drive another engine or to take power from a motor and send it to a machine.
Chain Drive: http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&q=%22chain+drive%22
From huge coin stamping machines down to the bicycle the chain transmits force from the engine to the machine. A bicycle chain takes energy from the pedals and sends it to the wheel, a simple machine.
Gears: http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&q=%22gears%22
Do the same thing they take motion from one axle and send it to another. An axle is a version of the wheel and is used to send rotational energy or to convert rotational energy to straight-line energy like in an elevator, or on a crane.

A transmission: http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&q=%22transmission%22&btnG=Search
Takes the energy from the engine and sends it to the wheels. Along the way it uses gears to change the rotational speed.
The internal combustion engine, like in a car: http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&q=%22internal+combustion+engine%22&btnG=Search
Is a combination of many machines. It takes the linear energy generated on the pistons (by explosions of gas) and sends it to the crankshaft to drive the car. It also uses the action of the crankshaft to power the alternator the steering pump and the air conditioner pump through pulleys. It is a combination of many individual machines used to drive pumps and the crankshaft.

Remember that a gear is a modified wheel, which is a simple machine. A pulley is the same thing, as is an axel. They all take energy and transmit it.

A simple child's wagon has four wheels two axels, a pole and a pin. Put it on the top of a hill and it takes the potential energy from gravity and sends it to the wheels to move the wagon down the hill. The pole and pin (the pin is an axel) work by transmitting the straight line pulling energy to pull the wagon. With the axel it can take pulling energy from a wide degree of angles (up, down, and left, right) and convert it to straight-line motion.

Most machines are just devices that simply take energy from one form and convert it to energy of another form. That is the basis for every motor, every transmission, and every gearbox…

Even something as simple as a screw takes rotational energy and converts it to straight line drilling action; and screws are inclined planes wrapped around a thick wheel or shaft. Inclined planes take are simple machines. If an object sits at the top of the slope then the potential energy of its weight, created by gravity, is used to overcome friction and send it down the slope. The slope lets the object overcome the force of friction. It converts the potential energy into movement. All wheels either transmit energy from an axel to something or take energy from the axel and transmit it to something. A wheel nailed to a wooden child’s car has the nail for an axel and takes the straight-line energy of a push and converts it to a movement that overcomes friction and can use gravity to make one push produce more WORK.

Machines produce WORK, and that is the key principle; work is done by converting one form of energy to another, and that is the operation of taking work from one source and modifying it to perform work on an object. A spring is a coiled incline plane. It takes kinetic energy and stores or absorbs it. The rough up and down movement of rolling on a road absorbs and dissipates that energy to give you a smooth ride. It absorbs energy from a bump in the road and expends it over a dip in the road keeping the bed stable.

Your teacher is leading up to the key idea of WORK. Usually a machine amplifies the energy or converts it between forms or direction, or it can just send it along the line. Whatever it does to do its job it has to take energy from one source and expend that energy on something else. That is force exerted on an object.
