If youare new to Linux, Try:
Mandriva 2006
Kubuntu
Fedora Core 5
Never done video editing but the GIMP is an ongoing graphics prgram that is starting to really 'grow up'

Why to complicate your life ??? GO and use windows!! it supports all the drivers of all the cards and chips and graphic hardware you want to use, and there are some awesome software that work on Windows...

Redhat is the best (for me) because i work with Java, UML and ASP but for you i think Mac is the best OS.
