Consider the etymology and history of liberlism or it's synonym "leftism" to understand the question further .
During pre-french revolutionary days the French parliment was composed of two estates(classes) what you would have is the uper class the first estate as they are properely known who sat on the right side of the parliment and you had the third/second estate(these were the lower classes of society) who sat on the left side of the parliment building . this is where you get the term right-wing and left-wing .
On the upside the poor have much to gain when supporting liberals because (a) liberalism's main intent is to support the low classes of society . (b) unlike it's contender conservatism, liberalism has less propensity to discriminate against other groups . (c) which is a personal opinon, the conservative party has unlike it's ideals showen to be wasteful (economic-wise) so the poor are not very much in favor of that .

Minorities tend to be liberal because the quintessential definition of liberal is pro-change and evolution of culture, while conservatism is more liking the way things are or even some regression. Neither one is right, but poor people don't like being poor and are therefore pro-change.

Actually it is not really a "poor" thing. It's more of an urban vs rural thing. I don't know where your "studies" are coming from, but in fact, most republicans tend to be less educated, RURAL poor. Liberals tend to reside in more URBAN areas and are a mixture of rich and poor. Have you ever been to new york city? incomes are very high there and its one of the most liberal places in the country. Many groups of monorities tend to be liberal because they reside in big urban citites.

OK seriously? I have 11 years experience in South Florida within the social welfare system and SERIOUSLY there are many many MANY immigrants out there that see the Democrats v Republicans as a simple matter of their old life v their new life. Think about it....many immigrants come from countries that boast the word Republic in front of the nations name thus ensuring that there is fear associated with the word Republic! Once I started to educate them as to who Abraham Lincoln was more and more voted Republican. So, I theorize that it is simple lack of education!

Actually, it's based on the fact that liberals tend to discriminate less. Therefore, groups who are in the minority -- socially, ethnically, religiously, etc. -- and who thus oppose discrimination find it easier to support liberals than to support the opposition who does favor discrimination against them.
It's purely survival based. You support the group that doesn't want to outlaw you.
