As everyone has already mentioned, there are dice with many more sides than 6, but 6 is the most common. I like my Scattergories die that has most of the letters of the alphabet on it. Also, you might be interested in the fact that "dice" is plural, but if you're talking about only one, it's a die. Strange but true. Enjoy your dice games.

Must not be a D&D player. There are 4, 8, 10, 12, and 20 sided dice out there.

It has been proved a very long time ago that it is only
possible to make regular polyhedron (i.e. volumes that have all their faces identical and all the sides of the faces of the same length) with 4 sides(triangular based pyramid) ,6 sides(cube) ,8 sides(octahedron) ,12 sides(dodecahedron) ,and 20 sides (icosahedron)
Among them the 6 side one is the easiest to manufacture. So it became the most popular one (and in fact the only one used till the 20th century)
For statistical reason 10 side dice were desirable (and manufactured) but they are not regular polyhedron: each side looks like an odd shaped diamond.
Note that there is also a 2 side die: a coin!

There are dice with as few as 4 sides... and the largest sided die i have ever seen is 30
theoretically because of the laws of geometry.. one could have a 360 sided die .. but who would want to make one large enough so that it would actually rest on one side... Standard dies are 6 sided because of the three dimensional properties of a cube

dice actually come in any number of sides, just check out the role-playing dice available at your local hobby shop.
I've been told that standard dice have six sides because of sheep anatomy. The first dice were sheep knucklebones, which apparently have six planes.
But I thik it's because a cube is easy to carve.

Yes hobby shops contain 4,6,8,10,12,20 etc. My local shop has a 100 sided die and it looks like a golf ball.
