Your heater core uses circulating engine coolant and a fan to disperse heat into the passenger compartment. Heat dispersed that way can minutely drop the overall coolant temperature.

The radiator normally cools the fluid running through the engine, but in some cases, the engine can still over heat. The heater coil acks the same way your radiator does, it's just a little smaller, but it can still help in cooling the fluid. But if you're car is over heating that usually means there's a bigger problem than just turning on your heater to cool it down.. If there's not enough fluid in your car, the heater probably won't work anyway, and you'll still over heat... Best thing to do is check your fluid levels, and if they are all good, the next thing to check is the thermostat in the engine it's self, it could be stuck... If you aren't sure how to do this, your best bet is to take it to a qualified mechanic...

Your heat comes from the engine in your car. So by turning on the heat you take away some of the heat from the engine and that helps to cool it off.

A car's heater is nothing more than a mini version of the radiator that sits in front of the engine. It gets its heat from the same engine coolant that goes through the main radiator.

More cooling using the heater core and the radiator; you're also helping expel the heat with the cabin fan forcing heat out.

It stops generating heat when it's off. Lift the hood if you want it to cool faster. If your driving and you know it's on it's way to over heating, turn on the heat on high this will help keep the engine cool and buy you more time.

The best way to do this but only in the summer month is to take out the thermostat and or putting in a new one.
But if you leave the thermostat out you heaters will not work but your engine will run cool.
But it helps if you get stuck on the hard shoulder So you can get it to a garage.

It's a smaller version of your radiator with a fan also, water is cooled the same way it would be under the hood.
