wow...everyone keeps leading you to believe that this black butterfly is some omen of evil or something. Don't fall for that.
Butterflies are seen as grace and beauty, dainty and almost etheral. Butterflies are also associated with peace and...well fairies if you get into that sort of thing.
Just because it was a black butterfly doesn't mean a thing. Black does not always mean a void or darkness or something sinister. Maybe that is a common butterfly for your area, there are some of those out there, ya' know. Black with bright neon colors all over their wings.
I'd think of it as your sister has something that attracts this butterfly and the butterfly was dancing with her. Perhaps she's young and therefore innocent and pure. Perhaps she is jovial and full of laughter. Whatever the case maybe the butterfly is a messenger of sorts....maybe she was worthy of a message from something more important in life.
Why is everyone so quick to say it was some omen of despair? A butterfly is a butterfly is a butterfly, maybe even the butterfly is a guide for your sister...or even you, since you might have witnessed it.

It could mean any number of things . . .
I would interepret it as follows:
the black color symbolizes a void, a source of creativity, a gestation
ironically, in the butterfly cycle, a coccoon would more typically suggest this image.
A butterfly would typically signify an emergence from a gestation, an emergence from a transformation.
So the black color and the butterfly create a tension of meaning between gestation and transformation.
I would interpret it to mean that she has undergone a transformation and emerged, and in this emerged, transformed state, she has a better connection with the void, or the creative source.

I believe all butterflies, even black ones (which was actually probably a moth) represent luck. If it was truly a butterfly, your sister can expect to have luck in her life (or at least in whatever she was doing at the time that the butterfly was flying around her).

The 'Butterfly' is a symbol of metamorphosis, to change, evolve or to transform.
Because the butterfly is one of the few creatures that actually changes from something else (caterpillers), it is the symbol for change.
In magick the color black is used for protection or to repel something that may be harmful. It can also symbolize the 'ending' of something. In other cultures is a symbol of death.
If we put the 2 together it could mean that one of you maybe undergoing a great change soon. I would view the occurance as a sign of great change emerging, where maybe certain aspect of her or your personality or ideas may change or certain situations may come to a close or change.
It is up for interpretation for you & your sister to come to a realization of the meaning. And for whom the sign may have been for.
Whichever one of you that this message was for, it needs to bare witness with either of your spirits, (ring true), to be considered a sign or message.
Discuss together to what it may indicatate, or of what you both may be presently going through.

I have never heard of it meaning anything. That is cool I will have to look it up and see what I find. I have not read anything on it. But our religion is always learning. We can never learn enough about the world.
Blessed Be

If you believe that it was an omen, what are your fears and hopes? You'll find out more by asking yourself why you'd think that than by asking people who can have no clue what is going on in your lives, and therefore won't be able to tell you anything useful.
