Steve Irwin was filming a documentary and was peirced in the chest by a sting ray unexpectedly. He died before they reached the hospital. His family was notified immediately. It was just a freak accident literally!

He was filming a documentary on stingrays in the Barrier Reef, when a stingray swung its tail. When it swung its tail the barb punctured Steve in the heart. He died almost immediately from cardiac arrest. Those barbs are deadly only when near a vital organ.

he was doing some sort of documentary and when he dove in the sea I guess he jumped on a sting ray accidentally and the sting went through his heart. I'm sad he was a great person helping animals. It's just to weird that this happened so soon he was only 44 years old.

i will never forget the image of steve irwin talking to the camera while sharks were in a feeding frenzy all around him while he stood in the water...the guy was a crazy kook but he was fascinating, funny and very entertaining...i kind of felt one day his luck would run out the way he took risks dealing with wildlife but i would never have guessed it would take a stingray to be the culprit....my condolences to his friends and family....he was one of a kind and his legacy will continue as his shows run on animal planet

Apparently he was filming an episode and got too close (like he always did) to a large sting ray and it got scared and whipped his tail around and stung him with the poison barb. It stuck in his heart and paralyzed the heart muscle. Steve's heart stopped and they couldn't revive him.

he was stuck in the heart (left atrium and left ventrical) by a sting ray barb. The stress on the heart caused cardiac arrest. It was a freak accident and tragic. Had it stuck him anywhere else he would be very sore and not in great shape, but would have lived most likely, as sting rays venom is not deadly to humans.

Anyone to joke about his death is very sick.

on the news this morning, they were saying that being stung by a ray is very rare and actually dying from one is even more uncommon. They said that rays are pretty passive creatures, but that they get attacked by tiger (or sand?) sharks and get a little spooked. Speculation is that this ray might have been bugged by a shark earlier and been more edgy than usual.

The media states that he was hit by a Stingray in the chest. Personally, I think that he may have a heart attack after having his heart punctured by the stingray.
That's just my opinion

he was filming a documentary for his daughter just off Cairns, and obviously was swimming near a stingray in shallow waters and it stung it's barb tail right in his heart, he died instantly i think. very shocking i am so sad. I live in New Zealand which is very close to australia, so our news is more accurate than what may be going around
