Is it worth it to drive to Death Valley?

I'm going to the Grand Canyon from SF, by way of Vegas. Is it worth it to drive out of the way and see Death Valley? If so, what are the best places to stay for a night? What are the things to see? I'm leaving early September.

You MUST like it HOT!!! Not much to see/do there...same with the canyon...you may as well see it all if you are gonna come this far........go ALL THE WAY!!!!!!

Pretty hot,Petrified Forest is OK!
