Checkers. It takes only seconds to learn to play and once you learn you never forget how to play. Takes hours to learn to play chess then you're lucky if you still remember how to play it a week later.

in a competitive sense, checkers is not on the same level
as chess. a fairer comparison would be to the korean game
of go. checkers simply isn't complex enough; it has been solved
for quite a while now. by solved, i mean there are computer
programs that can always win with the red side, and win or draw
(depending on the opponent's moves) from the black side.
the checkers champ was undefeated for several decades.

in america, the popularity of chess was at its height during the
cold war. bobby fischer was the us champion, and soon the
world champion. the brilliant sacrificial combinations of morphy
were brought to light once again, and the game's aesthetics
became clear. fischer improved USCF membership to
double its previous when he won the prestigious world title.

chess has been shown to help kids improve in school,
is very rewarding when played correctly, has incredibly
competitive tournaments- including its own olympics,
and has an appeal that i personally will never find
in checkers. checkers is a fun game that you play with
your family. a strong chess player puts his ratings and titles
on job applications.
outside of the us, chess grandmasters are the equivalent of
many stars in professional sports in terms of celebrity
status.
chess is my passion.
