Ever since I woke up this morning it has hurt every time I swallow. It isn't in the back like a sore throat, it is deep down in the area where I swallow, like a muscle trying to cramp or something, like a band around the front of my neck/throat - anyone had this?

It very well could be the tightening of the upper esophageal sphincter due to gastric reflux. Is it easier to swallow liquids? Does solid food get stuck? Do you wake up with a burning sensation or hoarseness? If the answers are yes, you need to see an ear, nose and throat doctor, and maybe a gastroenterologist. I'd start with the ENT first. Painful swallowing, no matter what the cause, needs medical attention.

That started happening to me in November 1999 and I still have it - every time I swallow. It feels like a lump or an obstructuion way down in my throat just about to where the esophagus begins. The drs did several tests on me and couldn't find anything visibly wrong but an ear, nose and throat dr. said it may be caused by chronic reflux disease. If it lasts for a week or more, it would be best to be seen by your doctor. Good luck!

Since it just started this morning I wouldn't worry too much. If it continues - or progresses to the point of obstructing breathing get to a medical facility right away!
You don't say if you have any fever....your age...or if you have had any other major medical conditions to take into account.

go to the doctor. get your thyroid checked. having a constant lump-feeling in your throat is a sign of an enlarged thyroid. it also could be something related to your ears. it would be best to just get into the doctor to be safe.
