If my guess is correct, I believe you are referring to:
Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA)
It is a method of multiple access, which doesn't divide up a channel by time (as in TDMA), or frequency (as in FDMA). It instead encodes data with a special code associated with each channel used. CDMA usually refers to a digital cellular phone system. For choosing a cell phone, some find the CDMA system better than others. But, there are pros and cons to all of the systems out there.

Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) - An air interface technology that was developed by the U.S. military and commercialized by the U.S. company Qualcomm. CDMA assigns a code to all speech bits, sends a scrambled transmission of the encoded speech over the air and reassembles the speech to its original form at the other end. CDMA supports SMS with a message length of 120 characters. With CDMA, each conversation is digitized and then tagged with a code. The mobile phone receives a signal to locate that particular code and it then deciphers the conversation off the airwaves. It codes each conversation expanding it 128 times, making it easy to decipher at the receiving end.

yeah it's Code division multiple access opposite to TDMA(time division multiple access) the technology used in GSM phones. CDMA can be explained in lay man's terms like this:
consider a tunnel now there are hundreds of people walking in it how you identify a person you know? by their face right other people(cell phones) also find people (incoming call) by their face that's how cdma works each signal is encrypted with a unique code which is embeded in a chip in user's cell phone when the signal corresponding to the chip is detected it will ring. here tunnel means bandwidth. got it !!!
