the difference between 9am and 12pm is 180 minutes... (3 hours).

For there to have been twice as minutes 72 minutes ago, would mean that 72 minutes ago it must have been 10am (60 & 120).

Therefore the time now would be 10am + 72minutes = 11.12am...

The answer therefore is 48 minutes.

First of all, there are three hours or 180 minutes between 9 am and noon.

It is now x minutes until noon. x + 72 minutes ago, it was 9 am + 2x.

Or 2x + (x + 72) = 180
3x + 72 = 180
3x = 108
x = 36

To test. If it is now 36 minutes until noon, it is 11:24. Seventy minutes before now, or one hour and twelve minutes before now, it was 10:12. 10:12 is 72 minutes or twice 36 minutes after 9 am.

72 minutes ago it was 144 minutes past 9:00 A.M, so 144 minutes past 9:00 is 2 hours and 24 minutes. That means it was 11:24 72 minutes ago. This would mean that now, it is 1 hour and 12 minutes past 11:24. It is now 12:36 A.M. This obviously is not the answer (or they are talking about tomorrow), so either the question is worded wrong, or I just can't count!

3 hours x 60 minutes = 180

180-72=108
108-3=36
36x2=72
72 - 60 minutes = 1 hr 12 minutes
add to 9am, and you have 10:12
10:12 added to 72 minutes
= 11:24....so 36 minutes before 12:00

36 mins because

180 mins between 9am and Noon minus 72 mins from this and you are left with 108 divide by 3 equals 36 and thus you have 36 mins before noon and 72 mins after 9am with the other 72 mins being the time in between
