I'd like to know the laws covering rattlesnake hunting in California. There seems to be a paucity of information on the subject.

Rattlesnakes In California

It is not against state law to keep native California snakes, but it is against most local city/county ordinances. As for hunting them (as to kill?) I believe they are protected except if they present a clear & immediate danger, and you'd better be ready to give a good explanation to any law officer who wants to chat with you about your rattlesnake shooting, your gun, and your intentions.

FWIW, rattlesnakes will not bother you if you don't bother them first. They have no agenda to attack humans, and would much prefer to be left alone. There is usually no real need to kill them unless they are preparing to strike at your child or pet, for given the opportunity they will almost always go in whatever direction you are not.

I wouldn't see why not unless rattlesnakes were an endangered species in CA. Maybe hunting is allowed during certain days of the year?

Apparently it is legal.

California Fish & Game Statute 7149.3. states in part that "a sport fishing license is not required for any resident to take any rattlesnake (genus Crotalus or Sistrurus)."

Rattle snake hunting is legal in several states. I didn't see anything about not being legal in Calif. They are a native of Calif.

if you are in a state or county park they say to leave them alone if you are not in a park it's open season ,no there is no season or license or tag required, I've been living in the foothills to long to mess with them...safety for the kids and critters first....they do make good hatbands , leave the rattle attached
