Not really. The movies don't always have everything in it the same way it happens in the books. To really understand them you need to read all the books. I saw the first movie before I read the first book and was amazed at how they changed some of the stuff to make it fit into a movie.

The first two movies, I'd say yes. The third left out a really essential plot point, for some reason. The fourth is mostly action so that would probably be fine for the movie. I'd definitely read at least the third rather than watch the movie.

You might as well read the books because you have quite a while before the films premiere. Also, the films may leave out an important section from the book.

Not even close. My roommate thought the same thing but as soon as she started reading the first book she realized how different they truly are. You won't understand half of the things going on in the books if you just go by the movies, trust me.

You shouldn't depend on a movie to catch you up to the books. The books have things in them that the movies never try to capture. You're best bet is always to read the books first.

I was really confused when I watched the 3rd one, Prisoner of Azkaban. I would recommend reading all of the books. They are fun to read, and go very quickly.
