If your yahoo! messenger is open, new-mail will be announced with a pop-up message when it arrives, and an envelope with a starburst for as long as it remains unread. The notification is an option that can be disabled.

you can go to:
http://mailnotifier.com
and get a fun little character that pops up on your screen and lets you know when you have mail. and all you have to do is right click on it and your email will open. it's quite simple.
:-)

That would depend on which email client you are using, what operating system your computer is running... if you would like to answer my first question, I will trade you for an answer to yours.
