Well, it obviously depends on which nation you mean.

In the USA, the country was founded on the concept that We the People have the final say over what our government does, that our elected officials are there to serve the country and to represent the people who elected them, that we must make sacrifices for the good of the community, but that such sacrifices cannot be forced upon us arbitrarily or without due process.

The country was founded on the concept of balancing the need for freedom and personal liberties against the structure inherent in a nation where people are held accountable under the rule of law. That power should never be concentrated such that it is beyond scope of review. That the government is limited in how much it can get away with. That the majority is not always right, even when it is in charge.

And that such power cannot and shall not be abused to deny We the People of our ability to have the final say over what our govt does.
