I want to have my laptop use the printer connected to my desktop computer. Every guide i find are for completely wireless, or completely wired networks.

Yes, get a wireless router.

Set the computers to the same workgroup name
Set the computers, so they have unique names
User the wireless security feature

You may have some troubles with firewalls and such, so test each device that is shared carefully.

Wireless signals sometimes fade and gain strength, which some applications can't tolerate. So when the network connection looks lost, they drop thier data. I have found that Quickbooks is an application that is best done through a wired network.

Not Much difference. Get a "wireless" router, but connect it to you desktop by a wire, use wireless access for the laptop. Connect your printer to the desktop, and make it shared so other machines in your network can use it.
